A Community Eruv

One of the laws of Shabbat is a prohibition against carrying objects from a "private" domain into a "public" one or vice versa, or more than 6 feet within a public domain. The recognized exception to the prohibition against carrying is carrying within a private area‑‑defined as an area with set borders surrounded by a wall. In the absence of a walled city or neighborhood, and pursuant to Jewish law, a symbolic wall called an "eruv" is created to surround the community for the sole purpose of permitting, within the eruv, carrying on Shabbat. This is allowed because the entire area within the eruv is considered as if a single property.

Halachic supervision is under the guidance of Rabbi Shnayer Roth, Certified Eruv Expert of New Haven CT and Rabbi Yechiel Baitelman. The eruv is constantly checked, updated and fixed.

The eruv is constantly checked, updated and fixed.

The status of the Eruv will be reported every Friday, IY’H, and will show as a green light when up, and if Chas V’Shalom the eruv is down, as a red light. During the rest of the week, there will be a flashing yellow light, indicating that the status is currently unverified.

There is a substantial cost involved in the maintenance and upkeep of the Eruv. Whether you’ve spent just a single Shabbos in Richmond, or enjoy the benefits of the Eruv weekly, we would greatly appreciate your financial support so that we may keep the eruv operational every week. Even a small donation makes a big difference, and there are a variety of ways that you can help to keep the Eruv web status page in honor of a simchah or yahrtzeit, or simply making a general donation.
